homo-cidal asked: Hi, I've been thinking about starting to cosplay and I'm so inspired to make some RWBY costume, and I'm sure I can figure out how to sew the clothes; but I have no idea how to make a weapon (that actually looks good and isn't too heavy). Like, what materials are good to use (and what did you use for yours)?
Hi there! This is gonna sound a little cheesey, but cosplaying is so much fun! Like, I love it! I’ve made a lot of new and good friends from it and it makes me feel good about myself after completing a difficult or long cosplay! And Ruby has been one of my favorites to make thus far!
So the weapon! Its been a bitch so far. The one pictured is actually the forth attempt at making the scythe becasue I had no idea what I was doing. The first and second time I tried making it out of craft foam cardboard and it was shit. The third time with craft foam cardboard went a little better but I completely botched it and was wasting too much money on materials so I gave up on it for a while.
About a month and a half ago though, I found this tutorial:
Which she also offers tutorials for the other weapons as well and each comes with a sort of blueprint for it. This helped me a lot but I definitely did things differently then she did. She also has a Deviant Art page under hte same name I believe.
For one, instead of using a broomstick as the handle base, I just used a thing of half inche PVC pipe, which I think is working great now. The only downside to it is that the two pieces cannot come apart like hers, but I also didn’t have the tools to cut the pieces off the broom.
As for the scythe bits, I used PVC sheets which you can order online. I got five large sheets (about 5’ x 2’) for around $40 on Amazon and craft foam (the soft, bendy kind) for the rasied edges on the details. For glue I just used regular super glue. In the tutorial she calls for an epoxy glue that needs about 5 minutes to cure, but that stuff HAS to be used outside or ina very well ventilated room as it is toxic and can make you sick. Super glue, however, can be used inside and is a lot safer. It takes only about 10 seconds to dry.
I don’t think I really changed much else, but I would just look as a lot of reference shots of the scythe.
Definitely just use materials that are light, but turdy like PVC.
Most of all though, have fun though! And let me know what your results are! :) Hope this helps!
